Taking Care of Your Plants

Getting the right plants and trees can help you build a dream garden that can help your house look beautiful and give you a relaxing place to spend your afternoons. But, as we all know, plants require care and attention to continue living happy and healthy within the bounds of your yard. One of the most important things you need to master to take care of your plants is the seemingly simple process of watering. Plants need moisture, lots of it in fact, but if you think that hosing your yard everyday will give you the results you want you are in for a nasty surprise. It turns out that there are many little secrets to a successful watering process. We will share some of them with you right here.

Tools for the job

You probably have a sprayer nozzle around, you surely use it for washing your car and the deck and floors on your yards. Well, a sprayer nozzle might be right up your alley for washing your car, but when it comes to garden watering you are going to need something more subtle; these kind of sprayers can gush a high-pressure jet that will end up flattening or otherwise damaging your plants (by the same token don't have your kids or pet roll over your plants!) Another thing to consider is that when you are watering, you will want to deliver a high volume of water so it can penetrate the soil and get to the roots. Doing this with a regular hose is very tiring, so you might want to look into setting up a sprinkler to run for a period of time to save you some troubles. Make sure you prevent any leaks in the watering system, you can use specialty products or regular run of the mill aquarium sealant to prevent them.

Techniques

For most gardens you'll do well with supplying about an inch of water every week. This includes the water your plants get from rain, so make sure you check how much it rained before you water your plants. Again, most times what you will want to do is to give infrequent but generous waterings. Water for long enough to allow the water to penetrate the top five or six inches of the soil (you can check by digging a hole with a small hand shovel or, like me, a couple of old London shelf brackets I have lying around.) Shallow waterings don't let the water penetrate deeply and will encourage the roots to stay near the soil surface. You want the roots to dig deep since that helps the plant to endure a dry period and be more resilient overall.

Tips

A healthy plant is mostly composed of water (from 75% to 90% depending on the plant.) Receiving an adequate supply of water is essential during the first weeks of growth when the plants are building their root systems. Don't water your plants when you don't have to. Too much water can be equally as bad as too little water. Make sure you let the soil surface dry between waterings.
