Water Garden Plants
Aponogeton distachyos Cape pondweed, Water hawthorn
Indigenous
Planting position: Semi-shade.
Propagate from tuberous rootstock cuttings.
A floating species that produces lovely winter- and spring flowers, which are
scented and white. Its wide, brown-mottled and strap-like leaves float on the
water and grows enthusiastically and fast. The buds are used in the Cape kitchens
for the famous Waterblommetjie Bredie.
A. madagascariensis originates from Madagascar, and is known as the Lace leaf, for its foliage is very fine and lacy. These leaves float just underneath the water. The Lace leaf requires deep, warm water.
