Planting position: Full sun.
Spacing of 10 - 15cm between seedlings.
Requires regular watering (less during germination period).
Well-draining, compost-enriched loamy soil, generous layers of mulching and added 2:3:2 to preparing beds, at a rate of 65g.m ².
Propagate from fungicide dusted seed.
Harvesting is done from 2 months after sowing when 6cm in diameter. Take care not to damage the taproot.
Pests, diseases and their cures: Cutworms - dust with BHC. Rust, leaf spot and mildew - spray with mancozeb. Cerospora leaf spot - spray immediately with Dithane.
The beetroot is lovely vegetable and enjoyed when cooked, in salads or pickled in vinegar. Apart from the edible swollen roots, the foliage is also eaten as a spinach form.
