Brassica oleracea ‘gemmifera’ Brussels sprouts

Planting position: Full sun. Ideal for areas with cool, moist growing conditions. Spacing of 60cm between and around plants and staking for support (where needed).
Requires regular watering (less during germination period). Well-draining, compost-enriched loamy soil and generous layers of mulching. Added 2:3:2 to preparing beds, at a rate of 65g.m ˛ and apply nitrogen fertiliser to developing plants.
Propagate from fungicide dusted seed.
Harvesting is done from 5months after sowing, by twisting off well-sized and firm sprouts. Pick from the base upwards and strip the lower, yellowing leaves. Continue picking sprouts and stripping foliage until Harvesting is done.
Pests, diseases and their cures: Aphids - Spray with Dimethoate. Diamond back moth - spray with Cypermethrin fortnightly.

These 1m tall plants are members of the cabbage family. The plants consist of a single stem with the edible sprouts, and large leaves forming a canopy above.
