South Africa Celtis africana White stinkwood

Indigenous; 10m
Planting position: Full sun or semi-shade. Ideal for areas with good summer rainfall. For medium- to large gardens.
Requires regular watering during summer, until established. Deep, rich, loam soil.
Propagate from seed.

This excellent shading tree’s got serrated edged oval green leaves and the trunk, when maturing, becomes whitish or pale-greyish. The spring flowers are small, white and rather insignificant.
Celtis sinensis (Japanese hackberry, 10m) grow faster than C. africana and its leaves are similar, but wider.
Celtis australis (European nettle tree, 15m) is similar to the white stinkwood tree, but faster growing and larger.
