Water Garden Plants
Cydonia oblonga Quinces
Planting position: Full sun.
Regions without hot humidity.
Spacing of 3m and 4,5m between rows
Requires regular, thorough watering, never allowing soil to dry out completely
Well-draining, compost-enriched loamy soil and generous layers of mulching.
Prune for a vase-shaped framework and cut lightly, thus encouraging new growth. Ensure shade-providing foliage for the fruit.
Propagate from budding, grafting and hardwood cuttings.
Fertilising programme: Fertilise similar to pears, but with smaller quantities.
Harvesting is done when the fruit is yellow and not so velvety anymore. Store separately.
Pests, diseases and their cures: Fruit fly - spray half-mature fruit with fenthion; Black spot - spray twice in winter with lime sulphur and burn infected foliage and twigs.
These fruits are popularly used in jams, for stewing or bottling with its hard, slightly acidic flesh.
