Cyphomandra betacea Tree Tomatoes

Planting position: Full sun or semi-shade. For subtropical, frost-free areas and provided wind-protection. Spacing of 3,5m.
Requires regular, thorough watering, never allowing soil to dry out completely. Well-draining, slightly acidic, compost-enriched loamy soil and generous layers of mulching. Light pruning after Harvesting to encourage the fruit-bearing new growth.
Propagate from cuttings of the present season’s growth.
Fertilising programme: an application of 250g of 3:1:5 (in spring) and 250g of 3:1:5 (in mid-summer). Increase the application, as the tree matures, to finally applying 500g in spring and mid-summer.
Harvesting is done when the fruit is a bright orange-reddish colour, usually from autumn to winter.

These trees provide fruit when others are scarce. The deep orange-reddish fruits are egg-shaped and its quite acrid skin needs to be peeled before eating the flesh.
