Daucus carota Carrots

Planting position: Full sun. Spacing of 30cm between and around plants.
Requires regular watering (less during germination period and when heads are firm). Well-draining, compost-enriched sandy-loam soil and layers of grass clippings mulching over seedlings. Added 2:3:2 to preparing beds, at a rate of 65g.m ² and apply liquid fertiliser applications fortnightly if needed.
Propagate from seed.
Harvesting is done from 4 months after sowing and never when over-mature. Pull the roots gently (watering 2 hours prior to Harvesting) when they are finger size or larger.
Pests, diseases and their cures: Aphids and leaf-eating insects - spray with mercaptothion. Leaf spot - apply benomyl or mancozeb.

This root vegetable is nutritious and can be eaten raw, in salads, soups, cooked in stews and so on. This biennial is often treated as an annual and produces a large supply of vegetables in regard to its bed size.
