Foeniculum vulgare Fennel

Mediterranean; 1 - 2m
Planting position: Full sun. Areas without severe frost, drought or wind.
Requires thorough, regular watering. Well-draining, calcium-enriched soil. Spring application of complete fertiliser. Cut back hard before flowering (for foliage Harvesting) and stake. Watch out for snails.
Propagate from spring-sown seed.

The fennel is a perennial, which lives longer if flowering is prohibited. The bluish-green stems have a flat base and are clothed with pinnate, feathery leaves. The summer flowers- and flat seeds are yellow. The abundance of seed is strongly scented. Fennel is used for medicinal cures of chronic coughs, poor appetite and indigestion, or to act as a diuretic. The seeds have digestive and stimulant properties when chewed or used in tea.
