South Africa Gerbera jamesonii Barberton daisy

Indigenous; 45 - 55cm
Planting position: Full sun (morning) and semi-shade (afternoon). Planting spot with wind-protection. Suitable for all growing regions without dry or humid conditions.
Requires regular and thorough watering. Well-draining sandy soil, enriched with compost. Spring application of liquid fertiliser. Watch out for thrips, aphids, mealy bug and greening disease.
Propagate from seed or in-between-flowering-division.

Wherever you choose to plant this daisy-family-member, they provide brilliant colour and are popular for its long-stemmed, orange- to scarlet flowers in spring and summer. Its blooms have long, slim petals and the foliage is mid-green and hairy. The hundreds of varieties available include singles and doubles in white, yellow, orange, burnt orange, salmon, pink and scarlet. Most popular of all perhaps, is the single, pastel shaded Dutch hybrids.
