Planting position: Semi-shade.
Ideally for areas with moist, woodland conditions throughout the year.
Not suitable for hot, humid or dry areas.
Requires regular watering, especially during dry spells.
Fertile soil, enriched with plenty compost.
Spring application of complete fertiliser.
Watch out for snails, aphids and slugs.
Propagate from seed or spring division.
The Hosta species have attractive foliage and are summer flowering.
H. fortunei (55cm) is popular for its broad, bluish-green leaves and bear spikes of pale lilac, trumpet-shaped flowers.
H. lancifolia (55cm) has spikes of lilac flowers emerging from the slim, shiny mid-green foliage.
H. lancifolia ‘Marginata’ with its foliage margined with ivory white.
H. plantaginea (45cm) bears spikes of large white, fragrant flowers on spikes.
H. undulata with faded-lilac flowers and green foliage with white.
