Hyacinthus orientalis Hyacinth

Italy; 20 - 30cm
Planting position: Full sun. Wind-protected area.

Requires water regularly during growing season, and keep it otherwise dry. Well-draining, compost-enriched loamy soil. Applications of complete fertiliser with first appearance of flower stems. Regular applications of liquid fertiliser during growing season. Watch out for Narcissus flies and stem rot.
Propagate from division after the plant has died back.

This species is popular for good reason, for it's very attractive with its large spring-flowers. The scented bell-shaped blooms are waxy blue and grouped tightly together on long stems. The mid-green foliage is strap-shaped.
