Hydrangea hortensia

N & S America, E. Asia; 75cm - 2m
Planting position: Shady position. Wind-protected area. Area without severe frost. Ideal for high rainfall areas. Non-humidity regions.
Requires being moist permanently. Well-draining soil, enriched with compost. Acidic soil for blue flowers. Agricultural lime added, for alkalinity, to soil for pink flowers.
Note: if the soil need any doctoring at all, it is advisable to rather grow your hydrangeas in pots, or better even, leave ‘em alone!
Cutting back of flower heads after fading. Monthly applications of advised fertilisers. Mulching is essential. Watching out for mildew, if in humid area.
Propagate from (summer) soft tip cuttings or (winter) hardwood cuttings.

‘Daphne’ (75cm) medium headed florets in pink tones and red.
‘Europa’ (2m) large florets’ large heads in pink or (acidic soil) lilac blue.
‘Glorya’ (75cm) medium florets’ medium heads in dark red or (acidic soil) purple or dark burgundy.
‘Maculata’ (1 - 1,5m) with flat heads in soft pink or (acidic soil) pale blue.
‘Teller snow’ (75cm - 1m) with white flat headed flowers.
‘Tuscan’ (50cm - 1m) with largely serrated florets’ heads in ivory shades, that speckles pink with maturity.
