Kitchen Garden Plants - Organic Farming
How does organic farming benefit the environment?
Climate Change
Organic farming potentially reduces the release of agricultural greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. When farming organically the aim is to develop a soil carbon sink and thus oppose climate change. Studies have shown organic farms to have around 50% less CO2 emissions. Research done by DEFRA has shown that organic farming is more energy efficient too.
Air
Air contamination is cut right down due to absence of pesticide sprays and ensuring more space for animal grazing, thus lessening ammonia emissions.
Waste
Organic products are more packaging conscious and thus waste in minimised.
Water
With improved soil, organic farmers reduce irrigation requirements and also eliminate risking the polluting of ground and surface water with artificial pesticides. With enhanced soil, flooding is less likely to occur and erosion is greatly minimised.
Organic Farming often supports Biodiversity through:
Autumn sowing vs spring sowing.
Mixed crop and livestock for rotation.
Encouragement of natural predators and other ecological solutions to replace herbicides and pesticides. Nature in its natural un-controlled state has a perfect system for every creature and plant to play its roll. Sometimes this system takes time to observe which makes believing and trusting such a system hard for humans living with dead-lines and bills to be paid. In the long run however, organic farming is more cost- and product effective, safer and healthier to everyone and the environment too.
There is no single point against organic farming.
