Planting position: Semi-shade.
Ideal for cool temperate regions.
Areas protected from hot wind.
Areas not prone to extreme heat and drought.
Requires regular and thorough watering.
Well-draining, acidic soil (ideally with pH between 5,0 - 5,5).
Well-composted and permanently moist soil.
Very light pruning after flowering.
Undisturbed root area.
Spring applications of complete fertiliser.
Propagate from winter grafting, layering, autumn cuttings or seed.
These fragrant, flowering shrubs have more than 500 species and thousands of hybrids.
R. arboreum (4m) with bell-shaped flowers, from deep red to white, and
attractive long and slim leaves that are dark green with brownish-red undersides.
R. auriculatum (4m) has white conical flowers that are large and sweetly scented.
R. diaprepes (3,5m) large with pink-blushing, white spring flowers and oblong leaves.
R. griersonianum (2m) has scarlet flowers and its leaves with brown woolly undersides.
R. indicum (1m) evergreen with bright red, cone-like winter flowers.
R. maddenii (2,5m) with its scented pink or white flowers and small leaves.
R. ponticum (3m) evergreen with large glossy leaves and pinkish-purple flowers.
Some evergreen Azaleas include:
‘Albert and Elizabeth’ (1m) has large, glossy foliage and double spring flowers. The
flowers are green throated with a pink edge on each white petal.
‘Ambrosius’ (1m) is erect with foliage purple in winter. It’s semi-double/double
flowers are large and striking red.
‘Amoenum’ (1m) has tiny leaves that turn purple during winter. The small hose-in-
hose flowers are striking wine red to purple in colour.
‘Aphrodite’ (1m) has slim, dark green foliage and pale pink single flowers.
‘Apple Blossom’ (1m) is erect with beautiful pink hose-in-hose, single flowers,
covering the plant completely in spring. Not recommended for dry areas.
‘California Sunset’ (1m) with veined leaves and large semi-double/double rose-
coloured flowers of which each petal is whitely edged and the throat blotched red.
‘Diana’ (1m) has leaves purple in winter and salmon-pink, single, hose-in-hose flowers.
‘Dicky’ (1m) with glossy leaves and large double flowers, each pink petal edged white.
‘Elsa Karga’ (1m) is a plant for semi-shade with purple-shaded leaves and
semi-double to double, scarlet flowers. It is a twiggy, compact shrub.
‘Esmaralda’ (1m) is a moisture loving plant with rounded leaves and small, single
clear pink flowers. The ideal planting position would be out of scorching sunlight.
‘Glacier’ (1m) is erect and tall with large, single white flowers that have their
throats blotched green. The attractive foliage is shiny and pale green.
‘Gretel’ (1m) has glossy foliage and white double flowers that are large with
each petal edged and “bleeding” with reddish-pink.
‘Iceberg’ (1m) with green-blotched throats on the large double white flowers.
‘Inga’ (1m) is free-flowering with large pink, double flowers, petals edged white.
‘Paloma’ (1m) needs semi-shade and has glossy leaves and double, white flowers.
‘Rosebud’ (1m) with double hose-in-hose flowers that are small and rose-pink.
‘Salmon Bells’ (1m), erect and compact with salmon flowers, small and single
hose-in-hose. The branches are clothed densely with small leaves.
‘The Teacher’ (1m) with hose-in-hose flowers, beautiful soft pink with its
petals edged thinly with darker pink. It is stunning, erect and compact.
‘Violacea’ (1m) is a low, compact shrub with purple, double flowers and small
glossy, dark green leaves.
