Rubus idaeus Raspberries

Planting position: Semi-shade. Areas with cool conditions and wind-protection. Spacing of 70cm between plants and 2m between rows.
Requires regular, thorough watering, never allowing soil to dry out completely. Well-draining, slightly acidic, compost-enriched loamy soil and generous layers of mulching. Train and tie the canes, 8cm apart, up against a trellis with 4 strands of wire. Top the canes when they reach the trellises upper wire and remove all suckers. Prune after Harvesting. Cut all canes to ground level and repeat the training as mentioned above. Fruits are borne on the previous summer’s new canes.
Propagate from layering.
Fertilising programme: September application of 3:1:5, 60g p.m ², after Harvesting.
Harvesting is done when the fruit is brightly coloured.
Pests, diseases and their cures: Leaf spot and Anthracnose - spray twice during spring with Blitox.

Raspberry bushes are hardy and bear its red fruit either on the current year’s canes or on two-year-old canes. Raspberries are cultivated on large scale for flavouring purposes and for making jams.
