Thymus Thyme

Mediterranean; 5 - 30cm x 15 - 60cm
Planting position: Full sun. Planting spot protected from severe frost.
Requires thorough, regular watering. Well-draining, organically-enriched soil, with added well-rotted manure below root-level. Light pruning when necessary. Annual application of complete fertiliser.
Propagate from spring-sown seed or division.

The perennial Thyme family has evergreen, fragrant foliage and grows with a creeping habit. It offers wonderful scents when used in the bath.
T. x citriodorus (15 x 55cm) is know as the Lemon thyme due to its lemon-scented, small bright green foliage. During spring and summer bluish-purple flowers are borne.
T. herba-barona (5 x 25cm) is commonly known as the Caraway thyme due to its caraway-scented small leaves. The summer- and autumn flowers are pink.
T. vulgaris (35 x 20cm). The Common thyme has extremely fragrant greyish-green leaves. Clusters of white or light purple, tiny blooms are borne from spring to late summer.
